Mount Properly Or Don't Mount At All!

You've finally got it: a brand new flat screen TV, a super comfy sofa, and your favorite movie all queued up on your DVD payer. Too bad your television set is leaning against the wall. Relaxing in your home is a great way to spend time with family and reduce stress, so why not do it the best way you can. Opt for a wall mount that best suits your TV and your lifestyle. Choosing one to coordinate with your television is a breeze; most will have a mount selection guide that lists corresponding sets. If only you knew how to set it up properly . . .

1. The first and most important step is to decide where in your room you would like the mount to go. Place it on a wall at a level high enough to view comfortably without having to crane your neck to look up or down. As well, make sure it's visible from most pieces of furniture in the room; not just your favorite chair. Room shape and size will be huge factors as well, so experiment by moving furniture and accessories. Most importantly, find out if there is an availability of power nearby.

2. Once you know where you want it, make sure it's possible for the TV to actually go there. Check carefully for studs to support the mount, and for any glare from a window. It's also helpful if there is lighting nearby to brighten the television screen. Once you've found a place that looks right, decide if it's a place where you could cut a hole in your wall to run the cable cords to avoid having them hang down. Many buildings don't allow this, so alternatively, you could have an electrician install an outlet behind the wall.

3. Plug in all cables to the TV set prior to hanging it up. Trying to get them in after it's been mounted is very difficult. Connect any cable you have that you may someday want to use, even if not for right now. Doing this makes adding new electronics to your entertainment area much simpler.

4. Get help from a buddy. Having a pair of sturdy, steady arms means no trying to balance the expensive TV in one hand while you try to scratch an itch. A second pair of eyes also helps ensure the mount is level and in a good location, and can help with heavy lifting, drilling, and wiring.

5. Turn off the power! Getting a jolt while handling your new electronics will send you both reeling to the floor. Always err on the side of caution when working with tools, electricity, wiring and expensive electronics. Turn off the power and keep it off until you are sure the job is complete.

If it seems like this task is too big for you, call a professional to make sure you are enjoying your newly mounted television safely and properly. Installing a TV mount can be a difficult task, so educate yourself on proper techniques and safety precautions before you begin. Now that you're all ready, stock your fridge full of tasty beverages and snacks, and get ready to enjoy your properly mounted TV.
